Aizawa had pretty good intuition when it came to his students. At least, he'd like to say he did. He hadn't always been the best teacher, but he felt like he was better with class 1-A. They respected him and he respected them. Everyone in the class had potential to become a truly successful hero.
The teacher got good at reading them. Sitting in class that day, he could tell something was wrong with Aoyama. His usual demeanor had been replaced with an disheaerened replica. The bright energy he normally gave off was gone, replaced by an eerie calm. He worked halfheartedly on a paper Aizawa had handed out.
When the bell rung, everyone turned in their worksheets and headed out for the day. Aizawa kept an eye on the blonde. He watched as Aoyama waited by his desk for another student. Iida placed his paper in the bin, then gently took Yuga by the hand with a smile. The two took another moment as they waited for their friends before leaving the classroom.
The rest of the day passed quickly. Back in the dorms Shota took a seat on one of the couches. He had barely start grading papers when Present Mic approached him.
"Hey Shota!" Mic casually flopped down next to him. "Grading papers huh? Who's are you on?"
"Aoyama" Aizawa replied.
"Is it just me, or has he been weird lately? "
"I noticed it today. I was thinking of talking to him tomorrow after class."
"Sounds like a good idea." Hizashi shifted gently to look at the ceiling. He didn't really feel like mentally grading work, but he wanted to stay in his partner's company.
They sat in silence for a moment. The hero marked the questions his student got wrong in red pen. He did surprisingly well on the worksheet, and Aizawa couldn't help but feel proud. Aoyama had come a long way from his first days in UA. He finished his corrections and flipped the paper over and into a growing pile.
Shota almost missed it. He grabbed the next paper, but pretty blue cursive drew him back to Aoyama's. He picked it up to get a closer look. Written on the back was a short message.
"This isn't your fault. Merci Mr. Aizawa"
A lump formed in his throat. Eraserhead stood with urgency, forgetting to put the paper down. He made a quick move towards the door.
"Sho? What's wrong?" Mic hadn't seen the note. He sat up, but Aizawa was already gone.
Outside, the teacher broke into a sprint. He prayed he was wrong. He prayed he was worries for nothing. Surely he had to be wrong about that the note meant. If he wasn't, then his student was a threat to himself. That he was going to make an attempt on his life.
What if he was too late? There was a chance that Aoyama had already fone through with it. Aizawa pushed the idea to the side. At the same time, he pulled the door of the class A dorm open. It was late, and no one saw him come in.
He took to the stairs in a rush, skipping a few as he went up. Yuga's dorm wasn't hard to get to, being only on the second floor. The pro-hero lept up the last step and rushed to Aoyama's door. Given the situation Aizawa figured it would be fine not to knock. When he reached for the door he was surprised to find that it opened with ease.
Inside was Yuga Aoyama, standing on a chair with a noose around his neck. The rope was secured to the mount normally used to hold his disco ball. The young boy looked surprised, his face quickly shifting to terror when he realized the position he was in.
"Easy kid. Let me help you get down from there." The teacher took a careful step forward, shutting the door behind him. Aoyama flinched, shifting away from Aizawa.
"Go away." Yuga murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "Let me do this."
"I can't do that Aoyama. You know I can't do that. I'm going to help you down, and we'll talk about this." Shota tried to choose his words carefully. One wrong choice could make everything go from bad to worse in an instant. Aizawa had gone through training for situations like this as a hero. He'd run attempted suicides; buying time for the proper professional to arrive. Words couldn't describe how different it felt now that it was his kid that was a danger to himself.
"Please Mr. Aizawa. I can't do this anymore. I-I won't." Aoyama pleaded a little louder as he forced back a sob. Eraserhead took a purposeful step forward, tugging at the end of his scarf. He was loosing the blonde and he knew it.
"You'll be alright Aoyama. I can help you if yo-"
"Non! There's nothing you can do!" Aoyama cried, cutting his teacher off.
"The only way to leave his side is-" Yuga cut himself off. He paused, made a fragile attempt to calm himself, then continued.
"I'll only be free from him when I'm dead. I'm more than willing to trade his noose for one I tied myself."
"What do you mean by that?" Shota couldn't figure out what he meant. It was clear Aoyama was in a bad situation, but what was it? Why does he believe this is what he has to do? The teacher took another gentle step towards his student. The boy turned his attention to anywhere but Aizawa.
"Yuga, tell me what's going on." There was no response. Aizawa stole another step towards his target. It closed the distance between the two. If he stretched he could touch the chair. The hero in training muttered something about not deserving his help. He whispered something else, but the only word Aizawa heard was "villain".
"Take the rope off your neck, okay? I'll help you get down."
"Je suis désolé. I'm sorry Mr. Aizawa." Violet eyes met red for the first time since Shota entered the room and confirmed everything he feared.
It all happened in a second. Yuga kicked the chair out from under him. Eraser rushed forward to try and keep him from breaking his neck. The knot attached to the light came undone, and Aoyama nearly fell to the floor. Aizawa was the only reason he didn't, having been close enough to catch him. He gently guided his student to the floor.
When they situated, Aizawa was sitting on the floor where the chair had been, Aoyama leaning into his chest. The look of complete and total defeat on his face before he made his attempt destroyed Shota. It made the man's entire being ache. How could he have let this happen in his own classroom? How could he miss the signs in one of his own?
Yuga clung to his teacher, head on his chest and sobbing. Shota held him in a tight embrace. If that knot hadn't come undone there was a good chance the kid would've died. Aizawa never would've forgiven himself if something happened while he was right there. Just the idea made Aizawa sick. He ran his hand through Aoyama's hair soothingly, noticing the little tangles in it for the first time.
"It's gonna be okay. I'll make sure you're safe." Aizawa wouldn't have told him he'd figure it out if he didn't mean it. Come hell or high water this kid was going to be alright. It was his responsibility as a teacher and a hero to help. It was his responsibility as a person too.
Slowly, the teacher helped Aoyama calm down. The boy didn't sit up, opting to relax further into Aizawa's chest instead. It felt a little relieving. His action meant he felt he could trust Shota.
They could figure this out. He would stay by his kid's side for as long as he needed, no matter what. Shota's sole objective was to protect and nurture his students, after all. It might even be what gives his life meaning. What gives him a purpose.
Sitting on the floor with the boy, he recognized he had failed. He had failed Yuga Aoyama. He swore to himself he would never do it again. Never again would he allow this pain to crush any of his students.
Never.
